Holzinger, a family-owned fish processing company in Upper Austria, is a cornerstone of Austria’s regional economy and the central European market. Holzinger has embarked on a digital and modernisation push, focusing on three key areas: using renewable energies, investing in new equipment and machines, and embracing progressive digitalisation.
Transition to 100% renewable energy
“As fish processors, we live directly with, in and from nature. The reason for our sustainability investments comes from this deep understanding of the basis of our existence,” said Bernd Holzinger, Deputy Managing Director of Holzinger.
Holzinger developed the infrastructure for a photovoltaic system which, once built, was expanded several times. It runs all heating systems along with air-heat pumps. This is complemented with a diverse renewable energy mix that includes hydro, wind and biogas, enabling the company to operate solely with its renewable energy installations. Modern insulation and LED lighting contribute to energy efficiency and further reduce environmental impact.
Prioritising waste reduction and environmental responsibility
Biodegradable cleaning agents, optimised fuel-saving logistics, and minimised water use in production are among Holzinger’s plethora of sustainability actions that protect the environment. Commitment extends to the source, with regular stream monitoring, natural streambank preservation and regeneration areas.
Holzinger closes the loop with innovative waste management. The remainders from the processing facility become fishmeal, filleting leftovers feed other animals, and a robust system sorts, collects and recycles remaining waste, including the packaging.
Adapting traditional aquaculture to a modern market pays off
Holzinger modernised its pond systems, fresh fish processing and smoking facilities, machinery, and internal logistics. It also digitalised administrative processes and developed IT systems to streamline operations. With these improvements, the company is processing from 1 000 to 1 500 tonnes of freshwater fish annually and producing up to 600 products daily.
Recognising the importance of consumer awareness, Holzinger has invested in high-quality fish processing, decarbonisation, and animal welfare to be profitable. As a result, it developed a delivery service that ensures customers receive fresh, smoked and frozen fish anywhere in Austria within 24 hours.
EU funding supports modernisation and growth
Thanks to funding support from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, federal government and province of Upper Austria, Holzinger was able to transform the company more quickly and with less risk for the small family business. They have achieved CO2-neutral production (emissions are balanced by equivalent removal or offset) whilst still expanding production capacity.
