Transforming passion into a leading trout farm
In the heart of Transylvania, the "Trout from your country" agricultural cooperative has transformed a personal passion into one of Romania's most successful trout farms. Located at an altitude of over 1255 m near the Lake Oașa, this initiative adheres to the highest European standards by capitalising on the region’s pristine water source.
“From a small trout farm, which I started for myself, as a hobby, I ended up meeting people who are as passionate as I am about aquaculture, and by joining in a cooperative unit, together we managed to become the largest trout producer in Romania,“ says Vasile Todasia, president and founding member of the cooperative during a press event held at the fish farm located on Lake Oaşa, Romania’s second largest artificial lake.
Cooperation driving sustainable aquaculture
In a joint and collaborative effort, six aquaculture enthusiasts realised that collaboration was key to competitiveness, founding then the cooperative. It aims to revitalise Romania's aquaculture sector by enhancing fish quality and safeguarding the interests of aquaculturists nationwide.
EU-funded Lake Oașa fish farm
Supported by financial backing from the EU's Operational Programme for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, approximately €2.2 million facilitated the acquisition of high-performance technology and transport for an estimated trout production of 375 tonnes.
Unlike traditional basin-based facilities, this operation takes place directly on Lake Oașa, over an area of 96 square metres. And as a result, Romanian consumers now have access to quality rainbow and salmon trout at competitive prices in major supermarkets.
