SEAWATER Cubes, a German start-up founded in 2018, aims to transform seafood production with its modular recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). The SEAWATER Cube is just what its name suggests. The decentralised and autonomous aquaculture system has a small physical footprint, and all automated processes can be easily and remotely monitored and controlled with an easy-to-use app.

Now seafood can be locally and sustainably produced almost anywhere – by almost anyone! This alternative approach to conventional farming not only supports global food security, but also gives farmers a great opportunity to increase their income.

High-quality local fish with less environmental impact

SEAWATER Cubes’ pioneering modular, land-based RAS use a closed loop to recycle water. The wastewater, a nutrient-rich sludge, can be integrated into biogas fermentation processes, transforming organic waste from fish farming into renewable energy sources. Taken together, the technology reduces the environmental impact of fish farming while lowering costs for producers.

A simple app and custom software integrate comprehensive fish data and provide automated control over water quality and fish health. This boosts performance and reliability, further reduces environmental impact, and makes it much easier for new operators to enter the market.

Disruptive model addresses sustainability, food security and marine conservation

Tonnes of fish are transported by plane from all over the world to European consumers. Our ocean face significant challenges due to overfishing, unsustainable practices and the depletion of marine ecosystems. As demand for seafood grows with the global population, these issues will only worsen. SEAWATER Cubes addresses all these issues.

“Our innovation isn’t just about producing fish; it’s about creating a balanced system that protects marine biodiversity and offers a reliable food source without harming the planet, all while strengthening the agriculture sector of tomorrow by enabling young farmers to diversify their traditional agri-business,” says Carolin Ackermann, CEO and co-founder of SEAWATER Cubes.
